FAQ - Does it hurt?

That's entirely up to you. There are no bullies in our class and everyone trains at their own speed and level.  We are one big happy family, so everyone tries to help each other improve. The lessons are friendly and courteous so there are very few injuries.

Whilst training at the club partner safety is of paramount importance. We utilise two common techniques to protect each other:

Breakfalls whereby when being thrown you slap the mat hard with a limb to absorb the power of the throw and allow you to land safely.

The 'Tap' mechanism when a lock is being applied as soon as your partner taps to indicate pain you release the lock.  Tapping is generally a physical mechanism as when applying strangles it could be very difficult to shout stop.  However in a situation where you are unlikely to see or feel your opponent 'Tap' they can simply say 'Tap'.  Simple and no one gets hurt.

An example of where a shouted 'Tap' is most appropriate.
